As I've been a part of the Xavier community over the last year and a half I've been able to be a part of some amazing service projects. My faith and school have helped me to really appreciate the holiday season more and more each year. I have grown to appreciate the fact that not everyone feels the warm thoughts once they see the first snow fall. The lights on a tree and house transformation are things that not everyone experiences year to year. By helping those not so fortunate throughout the years I see that it's a blessing to have warm thoughts and traditions in your life. It also makes me want to give back. I feel the desire to make a small difference in those not so fortunate so they may feel even a small piece of the comfort the holiday season brings. Some of these individuals cringe when they see the snow because they may not be able to afford a special gift for family member let alone pay to heat their home from the cold. It has taught me that Christmas doesn't always mean the same thing to everyone. It makes me sad to think I've been raised with such awesome thoughts of Christmas and there are adults and children who have no idea what a tradition really is.
Every year my family tries to improve someone's season. One year the adults in the family all sent money to the Smile Train, an organization that helps repair children with a cleft lip. Other years they simply adopt a family and take care of their list for gifts and food. It seems like a small gesture when our life seems so fulfilled but with every small act of kindness if one more person can feel the real reason for the season our kindness has done well.
